COURTYARD CLINIC HIV CLINICAL TRIAL

What is the PIvOT trial?

Triple-therapy combinations are usually effective and well tolerated, but it is possible there are alternatives that are just as effective, have less long-term side-effects and may leave more choices for treatment in the future.
The purpose of the trial is to find out whether simplifying treatment to PI monotherapy (only one drug) is as good as standard triple-therapy in the long-term.

We will recruit 400 participants into this trial.

Who can take part?

You may able to take part in this trial if you:
are taking standard triple-therapy for HIV,
have had an undetectable viral load for the last 6 months and
have a CD4 count above 100 cells

What is involved?

Half of the participants will switch from their standard triple-therapy combination to PI monotherapy and will attend clinic for trial visits at weeks 4, 8 and 12 and then every 12 weeks.
Half of the participants will continue on their standard triple-therapy combination. The trials visits are straight forward and will be similar to your usual clinic visits.

If you choose to take part, you will be involved in the trials for 3 to 5 years.

Why are we doing this trial?

A randomised controlled trial is the only way that we can find out for sure whether PI monotherapy is as good as (or perhaps better than) conventional combination treatment.
If the trial shows that PI monotherapy is at least as good as conventional treatment then this will be an important finding.

It will increase the number of treatment options available for long-term management of HIV disease and this may be of benefit to you and other people like you in the future.
